Our Worship Team

Meet Our Pastor.

Pastor Miranda P. Bermes (she/they)

Pastor Miranda graduated from Luther Seminary and moved from St Paul, MN to Hood River at the beginning of August 2021 to start her ministry with Spirit of Grace. Originally from the south suburbs of Chicago, Miranda fell in love with the Pacific Northwest during their 14 months volunteering at Holden Village after graduating from Valparaiso University in 2016. After 4 years of seminary in the Twin Cities, they were thrilled to return to the PNW and finally call it home.

Pastor Miranda has been discerning a call to ministry for over a decade, and is thrilled to be living out this next chapter in that journey. As a beloved child of the Triune God, she believes that she is called to serve and be in relationship with God’s people by creating space for abundant community, abiding with those in pain, advocating for the oppressed, preaching words of gospel and truth, and walking through difficult questions that arise by engaging in intentional and loving conversation in community with one another.

In their spare time, Miranda loves to read, bake, garden, and find new ways to express their creativity! Her cats, Harvey and Winnifred, keep her company at the parsonage, where she loves hosting game nights and dinners for her friends.

  • The open hearts of everyone here. From my first visit with the congregation in 2021, I felt deeply loved and welcomed, and that feeling has only grown with every passing year. The people here are incredibly faithful - not in a way that keeps them stuck in the past, but instead in a way that keeps their hearts open to the new and mysterious movements of the Spirit. Watching this community grow in faith and love – and growing right alongside them – is an honor and a privilege.

  • I believe that, as Christians, our primary calling is to love God by serving our neighbors. The Spirit of Grace Campus is how we strive to live out that calling – not by trying to do all of the work ourselves, but instead by providing a safe home for those who are already doing incredible work to serve our community. When the campus is filled with the life of the community, each receiving what they need and giving as they are able, I can feel the Spirit’s presence just as strongly as I do in worship or prayer.

Meet the rest of the Team!

At Spirit of Grace, we believe that ministry is a collaborative, community endeavor that all are invited to participate in. Our ministry would not be possible without the help and support of everyone in our congregation as well as our surrounding community.

Our Leadership Team is made up of 8-9 members elected by the congregation, who consult with the pastor on a regular basis, and gather for quarterly meetings to attend to the business of the congregation and discern how we are best called to respond to God’s callings for us in this time and place.

  • The Spirit of Grace community is special to me for the way it has supported me personally and supports our community.

  • Our love is extended to all through our worship, as well as being the home for the FISH Food Bank and The Sunshine Club.

  • Doug was raised Lutheran and was a teenager when his family moved from North Dakota to Vancouver, Washington in 1968. As a youth he played sports and was a member of Boy Scouts, where he learned life skills and attained the highest rank of Eagle at age 15. He graduated from Hudson Bay HS and also received a BA degree from CWU. White Salmon has been home for over 40 years and he has four adult sons and five grandchildren. Now retired, previous employment fields included grocery, law enforcement, and metal roll forming. He also serves with GEM (Gorge Ecumenical Ministries) and is a rotational volunteer with FISH.

  • I was born and raised in Massapequa Park, NY on Long Island. I initially attended Georgia Tech for Engineering. I love cars (especially Studebakers) and wanted to design them. That first year didn’t go so well, so I took a year off. One of my temporary jobs was in the mail room at Citibank. At the end of each day, I had to reconcile the postage spent by each department. That’s when I realized that as a compulsive record keeper with math skills, I was born to be an accountant. I enrolled in the local Community College and then transferred to Dowling College, where I received my Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. I earned my CPA license a few years later.

I had dreamed of moving out west since I was a child. By 1997, I had visited the lower 48 states and decided Oregon was the place for me. I loaded up my car and spent two weeks crisscrossing the country before arriving in Portland with nothing but a hotel reservation. I found a job in Hood River, which I still hold. My first Sunday in Hood River, I attended worship at Asbury United Methodist Church. The folks I met that day, and upon joining the choir, became my extended family. Once my parents were in need of Assisted Living, I found them a home at Brookside Manor.

I met Cory in  2007, and we married the following year. I adopted her then twelve-year-old son, Nick, in due course and fully embraced the role of Dad. We divorced in 2020 but are still amicable and Nick is the brightest spot in my world.

  • Spirit of Grace continues the warmth and love I felt on that first day at Asbury. We are committed to each other, to our community, and to bringing more of God’s love to the world.

  • Our campus gives us an opportunity to show that Spirit to others, whatever their path in life.

  • Sharon has been a member of Spirit of Grace since ‘03.  She is a retired registered nurse and committed to the community. She served on the planning team for the Food Bank building and is dedicated to food security for all.  She has been involved with the Strong Women group of Parkdale since it started. She loves going to the farmers market and living in this community!

  • I have lived in Hood River since 1993, born and raised in Iowa.  My husband Scott and I have two grown children, Brent and Bailey.  I am currently employed by Hood River County School District as a speech/language pathologist with the Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education Program.n Bay HS and also received a BA degree from CWU. White Salmon has been home for over 40 years and he has four adult sons and five grandchildren. Now retired, previous employment fields included grocery, law enforcement, and metal roll forming. • Spirit of Grace via Asbury United Methodist Church has been my church family since moving to Hood River.  The connection to the people here as well as our community outreach make Spirit of Grace special.  I believe we strive to continue the work of Christ in our ministry.

  • God is at work in our congregation as we strive to support each other.  God is at work in our community partners through the distribution of food at the Food Bank and the growing of food by the Master Gardeners in the garden.  God is at work with the labyrinth, a place for meditation, and God is at work as we fulfill the mission of bringing a home for the Sunshine Club to our place.  What will God present for us next?

  • I have lived in Hood River for 25 years and have been a member of Spirit of Grace for 23 of those years.

  • Spirit of Grace's congregation has strengthened my faith in God through its friendships and ministries.

  • I see our local and surrounding communities being supported through food insecurity, healthcare needs, and education.
